Sintering and crystallization behaviors of three lithium-silicate-based glass compositions were determined by heating the pressed specimens above their DTA crystallization peak temperatures. The crystallization procedure and microstructure of the heat-treated specimens were investigated by means of differential thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy.According to the results, while P2O5 encouraged the crystallization of both Li2SiO3 and Li2Si2O5 phases, ZrO2 did not show such capability. Furthermore, while Li2SiO3 was crystallized directly as the result of a bulk crystallization mechanism, Li2Si2O5 tended to crystallize epitaxially on the surface of the previously precipitated Li2SiO3 particles.
