Experimental Determination of the Maximum Allowable Stresses for High-Power Piezoelectric Generators
H. Abramovich, E. Tsikchotsky, G. Klein
Pages 131-136 · DOI: 10.4416/JCST2013-00006
High mechanical loads and/or electric fields or a combination of both tractions may lead to significant changes in the properties and parameters of PZT ceramics owing to the ferro-elastic processes in ceramics, domain wall motion, switching domains and the restructuring of the domain structures. This study uses well-designed tests to investigate the various parameters of high-power multi-element piezoelectric generators made from PZT ceramic under long-term cyclic external mechanical loading and presents maximum allowable working mechanical stresses. It has been shown that a stress of 30 MPa c …
Development of a Miniaturized Ceramic Differential Calorimeter Device in LTCC Technology

Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) is used to identify phase transition temperatures of different materials. Classical DSC devices are designed as stationary equipment and, owing to their weight and construction, mobile use is impossible. Relatively high costs may limit the span of application. To reduce costs and enable mobile applications, our idea was to construct a miniaturized ceramic differential scanning calorimeter in which furnace, temperature sensors, crucible, and reference are fully integrated into one single ceramic device measuring only a few centimetres in size.In this arti …
Liquid Phase Effect of Bi2O3 and La2O3 on Densification, Microstructure and Microwave Dielectric Properties of MgTiO3 Ceramics
T. Santhosh Kumar, D. Goswami, D. Pamu
Pages 145-150 · DOI: 10.4416/JCST2013-00004
MgTiO3 (MTO) ceramics were prepared by means of the solid-state reaction method with the addition of 0.5 – 1.5 wt% Bi2O3 or La2O3 as a sintering aid. The effect of Bi2O3 or La2O3 on the densification, microstructure and microwave dielectric properties of MTO ceramics was investigated. The sintering temperature of MTO ceramics with the addition of Bi2O3 or La2O3 was lowered to 1200 and 1300 °C, respectively. The lower sintering temperatures were attributed to the liquid phase effect and smaller particle sizes. The microwave dielectric properties showed profound dependence on the sintering tempe …

The phase transformation and magnetic properties of 10Li2O-9MnO2-16Fe2O3-15CaO-5P2O5-5Al2O3-40SiO2 (LMFCPAS) glass have been observed and investigated using x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive x-ray spectrometry (EDS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) with selected area electron diffraction (SAED). After crystallization of the LMFCPAS glass at 800 °C for 2 h, the crystalline phases of Li2Al2Si3O10, Li2SiO3, β-wollastonite (β-CaSiO3), lithium orthophosphate (Li3PO4), magnetite (FeFe2O4) and triphytite (Li(Mn0.5Fe0.5)PO4) were obtained. When …

Pages 157-162 · DOI: 10.4416/JCST2013-00007
In this work, we report on large-scale synthesis of α-MnO2 nanorods by the polyol route based on a simple redox reaction using an organic reducing agents potassium permanganate (KMnO4) and polyethylene glycol (PEG). The as-synthesized amorphous MnO2 is converted into crystalline form on annealing at temperature of 600 °C. The formation of MnO2 nanorod-like morphology is confirmed with scanning electron microscopy complemented with high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The nanorods measure about 50 – 200 nm in length and 50 nm in diameter. The electrochemical lithium intercalation a …
In Vitro Characterization of Carbon-Nanotube-Reinforced Hydroxyapatite Composite Coating on 316L Stainless Steel
S.P. Mohamadi, A. Nemati, Z. Sadeghian
Pages 163-168 · DOI: 10.4416/JCST2013-00009
This investigation focused on a comparison between hydroxyapatite (HA) and carbon-nanotube-reinforced hydroxyapatite composite (CNTs/HA) coatings. The HA and CNTs/HA composite (with 5 wt% CNTs) coatings were prepared with the sol-gel method on 316L stainless steel. Phase evaluation by means of XRD and Raman spectroscopy was performed on the HA and CNTs/HA composite coatings. The coatings were immersed in simulated body fluid (SBF) in order to evaluate the biological properties of the coatings. During the first week of immersion, the increase in the amount of Ca2+ precipitation in the SBF when …
