Influence of Microstructure on Crack Tip Toughness of α-Sialon Ceramics

C.T. Bodur, M. Thiele, M. Herrmann

Pages 105-110 · DOI: 10.4416/JCST2012-00010

For two different α-Sialon ceramics, one with a stoichiometric composition and the other one with an extra amount of yttria, the fracture toughness (SEVNB) and the crack opening displacements (COD) in the crack tip (CT) region were measured. The fracture toughness values were 3.0 MPa√m for the material without excess Y2O3 and 4.5 MPa√m for the material with a residual grain boundary phase. In contrast, the crack tip toughness of α-Sialon with the stoichiometric composition was 1.35 – 1.68 MPa√m and 0.95 – 1.01 MPa√m for the α-Sialon with an excess amount of yttria. Crack behavior in α-Sialon w …

Processing, Microstructure and Properties of Paper-Derived Porous Al2O3 Substrates

C. Kluthe , B. Dermeik , W. Kollenberg , P. Greil , N. Travitzky

Pages 111-118 · DOI: 10.4416/JCST2012-00008

In this work, preceramic papers containing 85 wt% Al2O3 were heat-treated at 1600 °C to obtain paper-derived ceramics. In order to increase the preceramic paper density prior to sintering, the papers were calendered at different roll temperatures and pressures. The influences of the calendering parameters on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the preceramic papers and the paper-derived ceramics were investigated. It was expected that especially the mechanical properties of the papers and derived ceramics would be improved by calendering. The increase in the preceramic paper densit …

Gadolinia-Neodymia-Co-Stabilized Zirconia Materials with High Toughness and Strength

F. Kern

Pages 119-130 · DOI: 10.4416/JCST2012-00004

Tetragonal zirconia polycrystals (TZP) ceramics are frequently used in structural applications owing to their attractive mechanical properties. The established standard materials Y-TZP and Ce-TZP suffer from deficiencies in either toughness or strength.Combining different stabilizer oxides can be a feasible strategy to obtain TZP materials with both high strength and toughness. 1 mol% gadolinium oxide-2 mol% neodymium oxide co-stabilized zirconia powder (GdNd2-TZP) was produced from pyrogenic unstabilized zirconia nanopowder via the nitrate route and blended with 0.5 and 20 vol% alumina respec …

Effect of Chemical Interaction on Texture Development in Bi4Ti3O12 using SrBi4Ti4O15 and SrBi8Ti7O27 Hetero-Templates

K. Onodera, T. Kimura

Pages 131-140 · DOI: 10.4416/JCST2012-00022

The hetero-templated grain growth method was applied to the development of texture in materials with the Aurivillius structure. When the template volume fraction was 0.20, the hetero-templated grain growth process developed texture in SrBi4Ti4O15 (SBT) matrix grains based on plate-like Bi4Ti3O12 (BiT) template grains [the specimen is denoted as SBT/BiT(0.20)] but did not develop texture in BiT matrix grains based on plate-like SBT template grains [BiT/SBT(0.20)]. The origin of the lack of texture development in BiT/SBT(0.20) was examined from two points of view, namely, solid-state spreading a …

Influence of Polyvinyl Alcohol/Zirconium Polycation Interactions on the Properties of Aqueous Alumina Suspensions

C. Rödel, F. Wehner, A. Meyer, T. Meissner, A. Potthoff, A. Michaelis

Pages 141-150 · DOI: 10.4416/JCST2012-00016

This paper presents and describes the interactions occurring in polyvinyl-alcohol-containing alumina suspensions containing different multivalent cations. The influence of Mg (+II), Ca (+II), Al (+III) and Zr (+IV) cations was studied systematically by means of surface potential, viscosity, sedimentation and adsorption measurement techniques. The results were compared with the results obtained for a monovalent reference (K (+I)). Whereas for Mg (+II), Ca (+II) and Al (+III) the interactions can be explained by compression of the electric double layer or formation of hydroxides, Zr (+IV) shows …

Processing of Nanostructured Zirconia Composite Ceramics with High Aging Resistance

M. Johannes, J. Schneider

Pages 151-158 · DOI: 10.4416/JCST2012-00015

Dense-sintered ceramic bodies of 3Y-TZP and ATZ (90 % ZrO2-10 %Al2O3) composite ceramic were prepared from commercial powders by means of slip casting, sintering and hot isostatic pressing. The powders were processed in an optimized milling procedure. The properties of the milled particles were determined with diffusive light scattering, Rietveld refinement, BET and SEM. The enhanced sintering activity allows a decrease in the sintering temperature by more than 100 K. After hot isostatic pressing, samples with a grain size of ≈ 150 nm were obtained. These nanostructured ceramics are not affect …
