A Study of a Surrogate Nuclear Thermal Propulsion Fuel Element
D.S. Tucker, A. Preston, N. Jered, A. Cunningham
Pages 49-54 · DOI: 10.4416/JCST2023-00001
A surrogate fuel, zirconium carbide/titanium nitride, has been prepared using a simple method to obtain a more uniform distribution of titanium nitride in the zirconium carbide matrix. Powders were sintered using spark plasma sintering at 2 023 K and 2 123 K using a modified sintering profile. This resulted in a fairly uniform distribution of titanium nitride in the zirconium carbide matrix with a density of 95 % of theoretical at 2 123 K. Scanning electron microscopy, indentation hardness and X-ray diffraction results are given.

Ceramic/metal bi-layer armor has received much attention due to its excellent ballistic protection performance, which is significantly contingent on configuration parameters like the ceramic/metal thickness ratio and lateral size of the ceramic. In the present manuscript, the ballistic response of 7.62-mm APM2 impacting AD995/5083-H116 armor is simulated. The ballistic limit is employed to quantitatively probe the influence of the thickness ratio, lateral size as well as coupling between two parameters on the ballistic performance. Numerical results manifest that an optimal thickness ratio exi …

To develop an electrical connector sealing glass suitable for stable high-temperature operation, a glass based on BaO-SiO2-CaO-Al2O3-B2O3 (BSCA) system was studied. The coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), glass transition temperature (Tg) and softening point temperature (Tf) of specimens were determined by means of dilatometer analysis, and the microscopic network structure of the glass powder was studied with Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The content of [BO3] was increased with the increase in B2O3 content. The effect of the content of B2O3 on the electrical properties o …

In this study, we investigate a multi-step spark plasma sintering (SPS) process for (Hf-Ta-Ti-Zr-Nb)C high-entropy carbides to produce dense, homogeneous carbide materials with superior mechanical properties. The process consists of compacting a high-entropy carbide powder mixture into a green body and sintering it under high-temperature plasma generated by a pulsed direct current voltage. The single-step of SPS achieves partial densification and solidification of the carbide material, while the multi-step process involves enhancing the microstructure and mechanical properties of the final pro …

This study compares for the first time the influence of different sintering routes on the structure of alumina samples prepared with the freeze-casting technique. Two-stage and fast sintering routes were compared with the conventional sintering route, and the sintering program proved to be crucial in controlling the microstructure of alumina ceramics. The results suggest that the alumina porosity and particle size are highly dependent on the sintering route. It was observed that the two-step sintering route is more efficient in controlling the particle growth of alumina (0.8 µm) when compared …

SrTiO3 grain boundary layer capacitors were prepared by means of a two-step sintering method. The effects of sintering conditions and CuO content in a CuO-PbO-Bi2O3-B2O3 oxidant on the microstructure, dielectric properties, and insulation resistance of the SrTiO3 capacitors were investigated. The results showed that during semi-conducting sintering, the SrTiO3 grain size increased with increasing sintering temperature, while the porosity decreased and the ceramic became denser. The SrTiO3 capacitor produced at a sintering temperature of 1 420 °C for 2 hours exhibited a maximum dielectric const …
