Influence of Meso-Scale Material Properties on Macro-Mechanical Behavior of Three-Dimensional Four-Directional Braided Composites under Uniaxial Tensile Load

J. Xin, Z. Fang, S. Yasong

Pages 83-98 · DOI: 10.4416/JCST2021-00017

Herein, a novel non-linear finite element model (FEM) is presented to investigate the influence of meso-scale material properties on the uniaxial tensile behavior of three-dimensional, four-directional braided composites. A reconstructed representative volume element (RVE) model is first introduced based on the micro-computed tomography (µ-CT) data and several damage modes, representing damage of yarns, matrix and the yarn/yarn and yarn/matrix interfaces, are taken into account in the meso-scale FEM model. The simulated mechanical behaviors and damage evolutions under longitudinal, transverse …

Plots of Surface Temperature and Mass of a Heated, Large Limestone Sample in Terms of Regression Splines and the Programming Language R

R. Lech, S. Sado

Pages 65-82 · DOI: 10.4416/JCST2021-00015

The use of the surface temperature and the mass of a limestone sample or sample conversion degree as variables present in various models of limestone calcination is shown in the paper. The linear model of the thermal dissociation rate of a large limestone sample is derived using the R program and the base of B - splines. The statistical significance of the formulated model is demonstrated. The example of the model recording of the thermal dissociation rate of a large limestone sample as a function of heating conditions, including the sample heating time, is shown. The values of the basis funct …

Improved Flexural Strength in Digital-Light-Processing-Printed Si3N4 Ceramics by Removing Carbon Residue

B. Jin, Y. Bian, Y. Shen, B. Xing, M. Li, Z. Zhao

Pages 99-106 · DOI: 10.4416/JCST2022-00001

The debinding step is vitally important to obtain defect-free ceramics in the fabrication of ceramics by means of DLP-3D printing. However, the residual carbon from the decomposition of the organic matter during the debinding process severely affects the quality and mechanical properties of the sintered ceramics. In this work, it has been proven that the carbon residue can participate in a carbothermal reduction reaction at 1 300 °C and lead to the formation of macroscopic defects such as delamination and cracks that occurred in the surface of the sintered silicon nitride ceramics. Based on th …

Effect of Al2O3 Doping on Damping Properties of YSZ Coatings

G.Y. Du, Y.T. Liu, G.H. Li, Y.S. Ni, X.Y. Liang, Z.L. Chen

Pages 107-112 · DOI: 10.4416/JCST2022-00005

In this paper, the changes in the microstructure and damping performance of x wt% Al-doped 8YSZ (xAl-YSZ, x = 0, 2.5, 5, 10, or 15) were investigated. Al-YSZ coatings with a thickness of about 80 μm were prepared on nickel-based alloys by means of EB-PVD. The surface morphology, phase composition and loss factor of the coatings were compared and analyzed by means of SEM, XRD, DMA, and SEM. XRD revealed that the grain size of the coating decreases, the preferred orientation changes to multi-orientation, and the diffraction peak intensity decreases. With reference to the DMA test results, it cou …

Powder Modification Technology and Preparation of MgAl2O4 Transparent Ceramics by Hot Pressing

L. Guo, Y. Zhao, S. Xu, H. Shi, A. Zheng, Y. Ma

Pages 113-120 · DOI: 10.4416/JCST2022-00007

Hot-pressed MgAl2O4 transparent ceramics were successfully prepared based on powder modification technology using commercial MgAl2O4 powder. With a 2-wt% polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) addition and the powder modification treatment, the average particle size of the powder is 70 – 150 nm, the specific surface area is 32.16 m2/g, and the median diameter (D (50)) is 7.2730 μm. Concluding the research about the effect of LiF on the properties of hot-pressed MgAl2O4 ceramics prepared based on powder modification technology, hot-press sintering proceeded well with a doping of 2 wt% PVA and 1 wt% LiF, and t …

Enhancement of Piezoelectric Properties in Lanthanum-Modified Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 Ceramics via Spontaneous Relaxor-to-Ferroelectric Transition

Y. Wang, C. Chen, S. Qian, X. Zhang

Pages 121-126 · DOI: 10.4416/JCST2022-00009

In relaxor ferroelectrics, spontaneous relaxor-to-ferroelectric transition has attracted much attention due to its unique performance. However, despite extensive studies over several decades, the effect of spontaneous relaxor-to-ferroelectric transition on the piezoelectric, dielectric and ferroelectric properties of relaxor ferroelectrics remains obscure. In this work, the piezoelectric, dielectric and ferroelectric properties of 12 % La-modified Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-xPbTiO3 ceramics, which exhibit spontaneous relaxor-to-ferroelectric transition with a wide composition range (0.44 ≤ x ≤ 0.51), we …
