Sintering Conditions, Microstructure and Properties of Alumina 10 vol% Zirconia Nanocomposites
F. Kern
Pages 1-8 · DOI: 10.4416/JCST2011-00036
Zirconia-toughened alumina (ZTA) ceramics of various compositions have high relevance in the field of mechanical engineering for cutting tools and wear parts as well as in biomedical applications for hip and knee implants.
In this study a matrix of submicron size α-alumina is reinforced with 10 vol% unstabilized zirconia nanoparticles. The ZTA ceramics were consolidated by means of hot pressing at 1400 – 1550 °C at 60 MPa axial pressure for 1 h in order to test the influence of the sintering conditions on the mechanical properties, microstructure and phase composition. Despite the conventional …
Colloidal Processing and CO2-Capture Performance Al2O3-Zeolite 13X Composites

Pages 9-16 · DOI: 10.4416/JCST2012-00039
Hierarchically porous composites for CO2-capture have been produced by coating the inner walls of foam-like macroporous alumina monoliths, produced by templated synthesis, with microporous zeolite 13X particles. Homogeneous and dense coatings of the particulate adsorbent were obtained when the impregnation process was performed at a pH above 9. At this pH-level the colloidally stable suspensions of the negatively charged zeolite 13X particles could fill all the voids of the highly connected pore space of the alumina supports and attach to the monolith walls, which had been pre-coated with poly …
Studies of Adsorption of Pillarized and Organofunctionalized Smectite Clay for Th4+ Removal

Pages 17-28 · DOI: 10.4416/JCST2012-00040
A natural smectite clay sample was taken from the Amazon region, Amazonas State, Brazil. Zirconium polyoxycations were inserted into the smectite structure in a pillaring process. The pillarized smectite was organofunctionalized with the compound 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane. The natural and modified clay samples were used for the adsorption of tetravalent thorium cation from aqueous solution in a batch process. The adsorption process was fitted to equilibrium and kinetic models. The effects of stirring time, adsorbent dosage and pH on the adsorption capacity demonstrated that 90 min is su …
The Effects of Nano Mgo on Physical and Mechanical Properties of Al2O3-SiC Composites
A. Nemati, F. Surani, H. Abdizadeh, and H.R. Baharvandi
Pages 29-34 · DOI: 10.4416/JCST2012-00034
In this research, the effects of nano-sized MgO in Al2O3-SiC composites were investigated. The overall changes in the density and mechanical properties of sintered samples (hardness, bending strength and toughness) were evaluated.
After mixing, drying and uniaxial compaction of the powders, they were first heat-treated at low temperature in an electric furnace to remove any residuals. They were then heat-treated at high temperature (1700 °C) inside a graphite furnace in argon atmosphere for sintering (at normal and high pressure). The content of MgO in the Al2O3-10 vol% SiC composite was 0, 5 …

Neodymium-doped yttrium-aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) ceramics that contained 0.025, 0.05 and 0.10 at% Nd2O3 additives and exhibited nearly the same optical properties as those of a single crystal were fabricated by means of the sol-gel technique and hot press sintering method. Transparent YAG and Nd:YAG ceramics are fabricated either by high-temperature vacuum sintering or post-hot isostatic pressing but not hot pressing. 0.5 mass% TEOS was used as a sintering aid. A nearly pore-free microstructure with an average grain size of 5 – 10 μm was obtained by sintering at 1700 °C. The optical transmitta …
Purpose: This paper explores the relationship between Young's modulus and porosity in stoneware ceramic parts fabricated by means of three-dimensional printing (3DP) and post-processed via kiln sintering. Porosity, strain, and bulk density vary according to the parameters of the sintering schedule, which in turn affects the mechanical properties of the 3D printed ceramics. It is useful to have a quantitative understanding of this relationship, however, the range of porosity typical to 3DP ceramics lies beyond the intended range of applicability for existing stiffness-porosity models. Here we p …
