3D Printing of Zirconia Ceramic Slurry: Effect of Overlapping Rate on Surface Finish and Mechanical Properties

J. Zhang, J. Zhou, J. Cai, G. Duan

Pages 71-80 · DOI: 10.4416/JCST2020-00020

This paper reports on how water-based zirconia ceramic for dentures has been successfully prepared for 3D printing based on a material extrusion process. The rheological properties of the ceramic slurry determine the process parameters, that is the buildability and formed quality of the printed samples. The rheological properties of the zirconia ceramic slurry have been explored to identify suitable process parameters. \"Collapse\" and \"overlapping\" models for the ceramic slurry filament have been developed to underpin the theoretical groundwork for selection of suitable printing parameters. …

Influence of Different Zn Substitution Sites on the Crystallinity and Morphology of Zn-Doped Nano-Hydroxyapatite Powder

Yangyang Wang, Tao Wang

Pages 81-86 · DOI: 10.4416/JCST2020-00023

Zn-substituted hydroxyapatite (ZnHA) has been studied as a biomaterial with enhanced biological activity, which is related to its crystal structure and micromorphology. We investigated the inner contacts at the sites of Zn-substitution, crystal structure conversion behavior and variation of morphology in ZnHA. The composition of samples with different Zn/(Zn+Ca) molar ratios (0 mol%, 1 mol%, 5 mol%, 10 mol% and 20 mol%) was characterized by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The morphologies of samples were examined with scanning electron micro …

Optimization of the Heat Treatment Process for Preparing Light-Green Glass-Ceramics from Blast Furnace Slag

Yi-ci Wang, Rui-xin Wang, Yi-fan Wang, Jia Liu, Yi-fan Chai, Guo-ping Luo

Pages 63-70 · DOI: 10.4416/JCST2021-00002

Light-green slag-based glass-ceramics were prepared using blast furnace water-quenched slag from the Baotou Iron and Steel Group as the main raw material. An orthogonal experimental design was used to study the influence of heat treatment process parameters on the flexural strength, devitrified mineral composition, and microstructure of the glass-ceramics. The order of influencing factors is crystallization temperature > nucleation time > nucleation temperature > crystallization time. The optimal heat treatment protocol comprised a nucleation temperature of 660 °C, a nucleation time of 2.5 h, …

The Compositions and Pore Structures of Benshanzhu Zisha Ceramics

Yu Lin, Chunyan Hu, Defang Ding, Haidong Hang, Chunrui Yang, Yuanbing Li, Yi Shen

Pages 107-114 · DOI: 10.4416/JCST2021-00004

Yixing Zisha ceramics are popular traditional tea-sets with a long history in China but there have seldom been studies exploring their compositions and microstructures. In this work, Benshanzhu-Zisha, a typical representative of Zisha clay from the city of Yixing in China, is investigated. The XRD results demonstrate that the Benshan Zhu clay is a natural mineral compound with a high content of hematite. After sintering, in comparison with pottery and porcelain, Benshanzhu-Zisha has the highest hematite (11.5 wt%) and amorphous phase (71.2 wt%) and the lowest mullite phase (10.7 wt%). Moreover …

The Effect of Sintering Temperature on the Phase Composition and Mechanical Properties of Al2O3-TiC-TiN Ceramic Tool Materials

Yuhuan Fei, Yuhuan Fei, Chuanzhen Huang, Chuanzhen Huang, Hanlian Liu, Tianen YANG, Jikang XU

Pages 97-106 · DOI: 10.4416/JCST2020-00028

Al2O3-20 vol% TiC-10 vol% TiN ceramic tool materials were fabricated with the hot-pressing technique at different sintering temperatures. The effects of the sintering temperature on the phase composition, mechanical properties, and microstructure were investigated. The results have shown that hexagonal-Mo3C2 and tetragonal-AlNi3 adversely affected the mechanical properties overall. Orthorhombic-MoNi and cubic-AlNi3 were able to improve the flexural strength and hardness, but cubic-AlNi3 decreased the fracture toughness. When the ceramic materials were sintered with the holding time of 10 minut …

Effect of ZrO2 Doping on Strength and Toughness of Mo2NiB2-Based Cermets

W. Li, Z. Fan, T. Ai, H. Dong, P. Jiang, X. Zou

Pages 115-124 · DOI: 10.4416/JCST2021-00012

Mo2NiB2-based cermets possess superior strength and excellent corrosion resistance, however, they usually exhibit poor toughness at room temperature. An improvement in toughness without reducing their strength is critical for the practical application of cermets. In this study, four series of Mo2NiB2-based cermets doped with ZrO2 particles (0 wt%, 1.0 wt%, 1.5 wt% and 2.0 wt%) were fabricated based on the boronizing sintering reaction of a mixture of ball-milled Mo-Ni-B-ZrO2 powders. The effect of the ZrO2 content on the microstructure and crystalline phases was investigated by means of transm …

Exploring the Relationship between Crystalline Structure and Intrinsic Properties for MgGa2O4 Transparent Ceramic with the Bond Valence Method

Shiqiao Li, Hao Wang, Bin Wang, Bingtian Tu, Weimin Wang, Zhengyi Fu

Pages 87-96 · DOI: 10.4416/JCST2020-00027

In this work, a novel spinel MgGa2O4 transparent ceramic was firstly prepared by means of air-presintering combined with hot isostatic pressing sintering. In contrast to the nearly normal spinel MgAl2O4, the MgGa2O4 was confirmed as the approximately inverse spinel with X-ray Rietveld refinement. Meanwhile, the polyhedral bond properties such as bond valence, bond length and bond force constant, which were obtained from the crystal structure parameters by means of the bond valence method, can aid understanding of the relationship between the crystal structure and properties. It was found that …
