In this study, ZrB2-MoSi2-based ceramics, namelyZrB2-15MoSi2, were produced by means ofspark plasma sintering technology. The effect of the amount of SiC additive on the microstructure of the oxide phase, morphology of the oxidized surface, thermophysical parameters, and thermal shock resistance were investigated with a variety of techniques, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive analysis (EDS), nanoindentation, and thermal expansion coefficient and laser thermal conductivity determinations. The measured thermophysical parameters indicate th …

The Effects of Eu2O3 Additive Amounts and Addition Methods on the Synthesis of β-SiAlON Multiphase Materials from Fly Ash Acid Slag

Kuizhou Dou, Yinshan Jiang, Bing Xue, Cundi Wei, Fangfei Li

Pages 1-8 · DOI: 10.4416/JCST2020-00017

β-SiAlON:Eu phosphors prepared from acid slag of fly ash at low temperatures were studied. The effect of the amounts and addition methods of Eu2O3 additives was discussed. The phase compositions of the products were characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectroscopy. The photoluminescence (PL) properties of the Eu-doped β-SiAlON phosphors were studied by means of photoluminescence spectroscopy. The morphology of the products was characterized with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results confirmed that the alumina extracted acid dissolutio …

The Effect of the P/Si Ratio on the Preparation and Properties of Phosphoric Acid-Metakaolin Geopolymers

E. Furlani, E. Aneggi, A. Rondinella, M. Zanocco, L. Fedrizzi, S. Maschio

Pages 19-28 · DOI: 10.4416/JCST2020-00022

The present research deals with the production and characterization of geopolymers prepared by mixing metakaolin, different amounts of phosphoric acid solution and water. Hardening was performed by aging the geopolymeric pastes in a climatic chamber. The workability of the pastes has been improved while the H2O/total solid content has been kept constant and the P/Si ratio increased. However, such a benefit implies considerable heat output, which must be controlled in order to limit the formation of extended fractures. The compressive strength of the hardened materials increases with increasing …

Effect of X (X = Al3+, V3+, Sc3+, In3+ and Y3+) Doping on the Dielectric Properties of Lead-Free BZT Ceramics

Zhang Kaituo, Xu Yuan, Xu Yuan, Xu Yuan, Fu Lei, Chen Ligui, Jia Shikui

Pages 29-36 · DOI: 10.4416/JCST2020-00026

Al3+-, V3+-, Sc3+-, In3+- and Y3+-ion-doped lead-free X-BaZr0.15Ti0.85O3(X-BZT-15) ceramics were prepared with the solid-phase reaction method. The crystal structure, micromorphology, and dielectric properties of the X-BZT-15 ceramics were studied. X-ray diffractometry shows that the prepared ceramics have a perovskite structure. Raman spectroscopy shows that the doped ions of BZT-15 ceramics do not significantly change the vibration frequency of the A1(LO3) mode, but have a greater impact on the new A1 g mode. The unit cell volume first increases and then decreases as the ion radius increases …

A Polishing-Free Etching Method for Microstructure Observation of Fine-Grained Ceramics

M. Liu, M. Liu, M. Liu, J. Zhao, S. Shimai, J. Zhang, J. Zhang, J. Zhang, H. Chen, H. Chen, H. Chen, D. Han, J. Liu, S. Wang, S. Wang

Microstructural studies are very important because of their decisive role in the properties of advanced ceramics. During the sample preparation process, it is critical to grind, polish, and etch the fracture surface of the ceramic for effective microstructure observation. Here, a sample preparation process is proposed based on direct etching of the fracture surface of the ceramic without the time-consuming grinding and polishing. We used this method to create micrographs for MgAl2O4, Al2O3, and ZrO2 ceramics with an average grain size less than 1 μm; these were clearly resolved by SEM. More im …

Fabrication of complicated silicon carbide ceramic components by acrylate gel-casting

Chuanru Cao, Shuyue Gao, Ying Sun, Bohang Xing, Cao Wang, Zhe Zhao

Pages 37-48 · DOI: 10.4416/JCST2021-00005

Solid-state sintered silicon carbide (SiC) ceramics with respectable performance were successfully prepared with a gel casting method. Only acrylic resins were used as dispersants to form a thermally gellable SiC ceramic slurry with reasonable solid load of 45 vol%. The effect of the dispersants and solid load on the stability and rheological behaviour of the SiC suspensions has been systematically discussed. It has been established that the sintering performance, microstructure and mechanical properties of SiC ceramics are significantly affected by the rheology behaviour of the SiC suspension …

Microstructure, Mechanical and Tribological Behaviour of TaC-SiC Composites

H. Chen, Z. Wu, W. Hai, W. Hai, W. Hai, L. Liu, L. Liu, L. Liu, F. Qin, X. Sun, T. Luo, W. Sun, W. Sun, W. Sun

Pages 9-18 · DOI: 10.4416/JCST2020-00021

Owing to their high hardness and high-temperature strength, tantalum carbide (TaC) ceramics are being developed for cutting tools or anti-wear materials on moving parts. It is worth examining the mechanical strength and intrinsic abrasion resistance of TaC-based composites to promote their tribological applications. In this study, TaC-silicon carbide (SiC) composites with 5 – 40 vol% SiC were hot-pressed, and their microstructure, mechanical and tribological properties were investigated. The microstructure of the composites was observed with field emission scanning electron spectroscopy (FESEM …
