Ageing Behavior of Injection-Molded ZTA Ceramics as a Function of Stabilizer Content
M. Abou el Ezz, F. Kern, R. Gadow
Pages 191-196 · DOI: 10.4416/JCST2011-00025
ZTA (zirconia-toughened alumina) ceramics are interesting materials for biomedical implants. High-quality implants are currently produced by means of cold isostatic pressing. The production of ZTA ceramic components by injection molding enables their mass production and an improvement in the cost and quality of complex near-net-shaped ceramic components. Injection-molded and hot-pressed ZTA materials with 10 vol% zirconia stabilized with 0, 1.5 and 3 mol% yttria were prepared and aged in an autoclave in water vapor at 134 °C for up to 48 h, corresponding to ∼ 175 years in vivo. The phase compo …
Dense Yttria Film Deposited on a Plasma-Sprayed Al2O3 Coating by Aerosol Deposition
B.-K. Lee, J.-H. Jung, B.-D. Hahn, W.-H. Yoon, D.-S. Park, J.-J. Choi, J. Ryu, J.-W. Kim, C. Ahn, K.-M. Song
Pages 197-202 · DOI: 10.4416/JCST2011-00026
Dense yttria (Y2O3) film was deposited on a plasma-sprayed alumina (Al2O3) surface by means of aerosol deposition (AD). The average surface roughness value (Ra) of the plasma-sprayed alumina was varied from 0.3 μm to 4.3 μm by grinding and grit-blasting with fine and coarse alumina abrasives. The ground alumina surface with an Ra value of 0.3 μm was too smooth for deposition of the yttria film by AD. A 30-μm-thick yttria film with 95.3 % TD was successfully deposited on the alumina surfaces with Ra values between 0.5 μm and 1.8 μm. On the other hand, the alumina surfaces with Ra values larger …
Synthesis and Characterization of Mesoporous Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate-Coated Magnetite Nanoparticles

Pages 203-210 · DOI: 10.4416/JCST2011-00021
Mesoporous magnetite nanoparticles are commonly used for biomedical and environmental applications. This can be attributed to their known magnetic properties and high surface area, the latter being a virtue of their nanometer-scale size. Applying coatings with various chemical functionalities to these nanoparticles increases their scope of application. Different organic and inorganic coatings have been explored. Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) is a well-known surfactant that improves the surface properties of nanoparticles. This paper explores the in situ formation of SDS coatings on the surface …
Injection Molding of Alumina-Chromia-Yttria Composites
F. Sommer, F. Kern, R. Gadow
Pages 211-216 · DOI: 10.4416/JCST2011-00035
A submicron alumina powder was co-doped with chromia and yttria in order to obtain a homogeneous microstructure with grain boundaries strengthened by yttrium aluminium garnet (YAG) precipitates and a solid solution of chromia in alumina leading to high hardness and enhanced fracture toughness. The ceramic injection molding (CIM) process was applied as one of the most high-performance technologies for complex components and near-net-shape series production capability. To ensure the production of samples without defects, the injection parameters were optimized. CIM specimens were pressurelessly …
Feasibility Study on Rapid Prototyping of Porcelain Products
X. Tian, T. Mühler, C. Gomes, J. Günster, J.G. Heinrich
Pages 217-226 · DOI: 10.4416/JCST2011-00038
In order to reduce the time to market of new or customized porcelain products or artworks, rapid prototyping using layer-wise slurry deposition (LSD) was studied in the present research. The properties such as phase composition, microstructure, shrinkage, density, and mechanical strength, of laser-sintered (LS) and biscuit-fired (BF) samples before and after post-sintering in a furnace were studied and compared with each other. The laser-sintered sample was comparable with the biscuit-fired sample with regard to porosity, but had just half the mechanical strength of the latter. The feasibility …

Calcium phosphate cements (CPCs) have been clinically used for the past fifteen years in different hard-tissue-related applications. The end-product of a set CPC is normally a hydroxyapatite (Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2; HAp), which has structural and morphological similarity to the mineral part in these hard tissues. Similar to ceramic materials, CPCs have the disadvantage of being brittle, which limits their applications to non-load bearing applications. The addition of a ductile ingredient, such as biocompatible polymers, has been suggested as a reasonable avenue to solve these problems. The current st …
