Abstract

This study compares for the first time the influence of different sintering routes on the structure of alumina samples prepared with the freeze-casting technique. Two-stage and fast sintering routes were compared with the conventional sintering route, and the sintering program proved to be crucial in controlling the microstructure of alumina ceramics. The results suggest that the alumina porosity and particle size are highly dependent on the sintering route. It was observed that the two-step sintering route is more efficient in controlling the particle growth of alumina (0.8 µm) when compared to the conventional (1.2 µm) and fast (0.9 µm) sintering routes. Regarding the mechanical properties, it was observed that an improvement in flexural strength was achieved when the two-stage sintering program (6.15 MPa) was used, which is associated with its microstructural refinement.
